Introduction

The Ebbern-Paling family album now has 10 pages ….. that is  Page 1  Page 2  Page 3  Page 4  Page 5  Page 6  Page 7  Page 8  Page 9 , and now a new Page 10
This is a page on the Ebbern and Paling families, recently (October 2025) added thanks to additional information, including several photographs, contibuted by Anne Barrett (nee Ebbern). Also it helps to fill a few gaps left on the previous pages.
Anne is the daughter of George William Ebbern and Ida Colling (nee Ross), the granddaughter of George Ebbern and Mary Elizabeth (nee George), and the great granddaughter of Thomas Ebbern and Mary (nee Birch).

Anne’s family (in her own words)

Thomas Ebbern and Mary Elizabeth Ebbern (nee Birch) were my great grandparents. Their son (my grandfather) George Ebbern was born on May 10th, 1887. He married Mary Elizabeth George on September 11th, 1912.
.

Mary Elizabeth George had been born in 1889 ….

George and Mary Elizabeth Ebbern were my grandparents …

… and here they are together …

… and here’s grandpa with me

George and Mary Elizabeth had two sons. The elder was my father George William, born on December 1st, 1915.  The other son was Frank Birch Ebbern.
And here are my grandparents …

… together with my father George William

… and my grandmother with Frank Birch

Frank Birch Ebbern passed away aged 19 months
.

My dad George William Ebbern met my mum Ida Colling Ross (1918 – 1993) in Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield during the Second World War and my mum nursed him. He was a tank transporter and was in hospital with Appendicitis. Their romance blossomed and she moved from Wakefield to 29 Millfield Road in Ilkeston to live with his parents.

In July 1942 they married (below). You will also see Elsie and May — the Paling twins born in 1916 — acting as bridesmaids, standing either side of the bride. (see Page 3)

Their first child was Frank William Ebbern born on April 8th,  1945 and then me, Anne Elizabeth Ebbern, born on April 9th, 1953. When I was born we moved into a new house in Kirk Hallam. My dad worked at Stanton Ironworks and my mum was a district nurse for many years.
Annie Paling was my grandad’s sister, so my dad’s aunt. I always called them ‘auntie’, even their children Elsie and May. I have fond memories of Elsie and May. They always walked to Kirk Hallam church on a Sunday to put flowers on their dad’s grave. Every Sunday they would call at mum and dad’s for a coffee. The China cups always came out for them. They were also bell ringers at Trowell church.
This is a family group of my grandparents George Ebbern and Mary Elizabeth Ebbern, Frank Ebbern (my brother) and Annie Paling (my grandfather’s sister .. see Page 1).
